This week resistance to illegal Trump/Musk actions began to surface: Judges issued orders to halt a number of unconstitutional practices, while Republican-leaning groups noticed that federal funding freezes hurt them as well — and they heard Musk lie about their own activities, not just those of distant liberals. A few Republican senators began to stand up for their affected constituents, while still not connecting the dots about how the Trump/Musk actions are hurting Americans in general.
I’ll cover that in the weekly summary. The featured post is a look back into a poorly understood episode of American history: the Populist movement of the late 1800s. In general, I’m trying to understand how America got from the Gilded Age and the robber barons to antitrust laws and the New Deal. It wasn’t just the Depression, it involved a larger change in what David Graeber called “political common sense”. How did that happen? Late-1800s Populism is a piece of that puzzle, and it tells us something not just about what we need to do next, but illuminates how the MAGA movement became what it is.

Neither you or the Weekly Sift seem to be on Blue Sky yet (though you do get an occasional mention. I hope that you will consider joining; except for thirst trap messages from ostensible women, it’s an interesting and rejuvenating place to be. (I have zero pecuniary stake in it, by the way.)
No one in the administration of the Orange Felon has any intention of obeying judicial orders. And anyone who dares entertain the thought of doing so, such as the US Marshals Service, which is under the DoJ and controlled by sycophant Pam Bondi, will be fired.
In the meantime, members of Congress and their staffs have reported a marked increase in direct death threats if they fail to enthusiastically support and acquiesce to the MAGA agenda, the blatantly illegal activities of Musk and his script kiddies hacking government systems, and the Article II Executive completely devouring the Article I Legislative prerogatives clearly delineated in our Constitution.
Wherever could the Brownshirts have gotten the idea that such threats would not only go unpunished, but be welcomed by the new regime?
The amalgamation of supplicant corporate oligarchs and political Nazis have control of our federal government. Unless the Judiciary suddenly gets the backing of the US Military, their rulings will just be words on paper the Nazis laugh at.
